I Love Me, I Love Me Not.

On the 16th of January The Daily Post said “Most of us are excellent at being self-deprecating, and are not so good at the opposite. Tell us your favorite thing about yourself.”  Considering earlier today one of my friends was telling me off for this exact same thing (“You’re so hard on yourself.” she said, “I’m only honest”, I replied.), I have decided that I’m going to give this one a go.  On the basis that I have miniscule amounts of self-esteem and an oversized sense of realism, it’s going to take some time to work out what my favourite thing about myself might possibly be.

This post has actually now been sitting in my drafts folder for 9 days, and I still don’t have an answer.  So yes, I have back dated the publication of this post to the day that I started writing it, sorry.

There’s very little, if anything, that I would actually go as far as to say that I really like about myself.  I asked my friend what his favourite thing about himself was and in a flash he replied “I like my personality, and I’m really good at making girls happy.”, so really that didn’t inspire me at all since I have the personality of a 14 year old chess champion who enjoys sugar binges (although maybe I should learn how to play chess incase somebody asks me to back up this statement).  I would never a choose a physical aspect, because there’s a certain amount of self confidence required for that which I just don’t possess (except perhaps on a good boob day. All females reading this know what I’m talking about. Good boob days are infinitely better for your self esteem than good hair days.)  I don’t have a particularly active social circle or a wonderful job or the most fantastic health records (I currently have my arm in a sling.  The doctor would probably go mental if she knew I’d taken it off and was moving my arm to type, but single-fingered typing is nigh impossible.) I’m not one of these outstandingly successful people who only does things worthy of large scale recognition.

So, feeling compelled to come up with an answer, I decided that my favourite thing about myself should be my self identity.  I’m pretty confident in what I am and very sure of what I’m not.  I don’t lie to myself.  I’m comfortable with what I can do, and regardless of whether I’m happy or not with what I can’t do I know myself well enough to know when it’s time to just draw the line and say “No. It’s never happening. Give up.”.  As long as you give it a shot in the first place I don’t think it can be classed as giving up.

My favourite thing about myself is that I know exactly who ‘myself’ is, and that’s a very useful piece of knowledge for a person to have.
